Soon after graduating from San Pedro High School in '44, Morey joined as an Army medic with the 34th Infantry, who were among the first to land in Japan, at the end of the Second World War. In "retirement," Morey spent many hours in his garage shop as a mechanic and sometime wood worker. He ran a dump truck and tractor business as well. Ever industrious, he also fueled mail-order sales of his invention, the CVCG 6-volt converter/generator, units of which he assembled by hand.
Morey is survived by his sisters, Rose Schaefer and Rita Kopp; children Maurice Jr., Joseph, Renee Barron and Michelle; and by grandchildren, Lorraine, Andrea, Lee Carlock, Brianna Jochumsen, Philip and Scott. All will miss the gruff manner that thinly disguised Morey's warm heart.
Mark McKendry
Mark Andrew McKendry left all of us far too soon on March 21, 2005, as the result of a construction job accident. Born at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., on April 21, 1983, Mark lived in Oceanside and attended Laurel Elementary, St. Mary Star of the Sea School, Palmquist Elementary, Lincoln Middle School and Oceanside High, where he graduated in 2001. He attended Long Beach Community College and the El Camino Firefighting Academy in Inglewood, Calif.
Mark leaves behind his mother, Laura Parr-McKendry of Ashland, Oregon; his very loving parents, Joseph and Tish Gallagher; his brothers, Max Gallagher, Drew and Ian Spaeth of Oceanside; his grandmother, Madeline McKendry of Boca Raton, Florida; his aunt, Madeline McKendry of New York City; his grandmother, Florence Gallagher of Naples, Fla.; his devoted girlfriend, Katherine "Kat" Harris; his padrina, Maria Rendon of San Marcos; and his beloved dogs, Nuggs and Sally. An extensive family of aunts, uncles and cousins residing in California, Missouri, Florida and Ohio, also survives Mark. Mark had so very many friends, and extended family, too numerous to mention, who were all touched by Mark's friendship, love and kindness. Mark was the best son, brother and friend a person could wish to have in life. He was fun-loving, colorful, animal loving, adventurous, full of life, a wonderfully good, creative, intelligent and absolutely gorgeous human being with so many diverse, eclectic interests that he packed into his brief 21 years of life. Mark also perfected the art of driving every one of us crazy
with his over-the-top, larger-than-life antics and big ideas. Mark McKendry was very involved in the Jazz Band, Marching Band and the American Drum Line at Oceanside High. He was one of the youngest graduates of the El Camino Firefighting Academy, with honors in 2003. Mark McKendry surfed competitively on the Palmquist, Lincoln MS and Oceanside HS teams. He and his dad, Joe Gallagher, formed the Forrester St. Surfers Union (FSSU) in the early '90s and Joe's orange van with Mark riding shotgun was a recognized sight for many of the local surfers. Mark played baseball in the Oceanside American Little League from T-Ball to Junior-Senior League over 10 years and made All-Stars. Mark Andrew was an accomplished musician, and from age 9, he played the saxophone, drums and guitar with a skill beyond his years. Mark loved riding and building high-end bikes of all kinds, surfing, snowboarding, skydiving, waterskiing, wakeboarding, skateboarding and video gaming. He spoke fluent Spanish, which he learned from his familia Rendon at the age of 3, mastering the language in only six months. He loved so many
things and lived his life with an incredible, vivacious passion. Mark demonstrated the "joy of living" in practically everything he did. Mark loved creating ceramics of all kinds. Mark loved his family and took great pride in his brothers. Mark Andrew McKendry will be sorely missed for he affected so many with his joyful attitude and easy smile. His charm and compassion will remain his greatest gift in our hearts, always. Mark made the world a better place and will be rejoined with his natural father, Mark Phillip McKendry, in the kingdom of heaven.
A celebration of Mark's life will be held at St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Oceanside at 11 a.m. on April 2, 2005.
In lieu of flowers, please be kind and love one another for we never know when someone so very precious to us will be taken away. Meeting our beloved Mark again is forever part of our journey.
