Chargers scouting report
By: JAY PARIS - Staff Writer | ∞
Opponent: Buffalo Bills
Kickoff: 10 a.m., Sunday at Ralph Wilson Stadium
Series: The Chargers lead the series 19-11-2 and have won four of the past six meetings. In their most recent pairing, the Chargers prevailed 48-10 last year at San Diego.
Player to watch: QB J.P. Losman
Losman was part of that 2004 first round that produced Eli Manning, Philip Rivers and Ben Roethlisberger. Losman, at No. 22, was the fourth of the celebrated quarterbacks to be selected and has solidified his role this year as the Bills' offensive leader. He's made his biggest strides in accuracy, as his footwork improved dramatically under QB coach Turk Schonert in the offseason. He hit 49.1 percent of his passes in 2005, the worst of any NFL starter. This year's he's at 63.8 as he has completed 185-of-290 attempts for 2,007 yards, 10 touchdowns and eight interceptions. Losman has produced two straight last-minute, game-winning drives.
Offense
RB Willis McGahee had 63 rushing yards in Sunday's victory and could provide a stiff test for the Chargers' run defense. ... WR Lee Evans is a burner and scorched Houston for 265 receiving yards two weeks ago. Evans is more than a speed-merchant, as he's not shy about going over the middle. But it's the deep routes where he is most dangerous, which means the Chargers' safeties need to be aware of his location. Evans has 60 catches for 880 yards and four scores. ... Undrafted LT Jason Peters, a former 350-pound TE at Arkansas, has been a find. Since taking over the starting role four games again he has helped fortify what is an average front. ... Pass protection has been a problem (32 sacks allowed) as the line must compensate for a shaky RT Terrence Pennington, a rookie seventh-round pick.
Defense
DEs Aaron Schobel and Chris Kelsay don't get much publicity, but both are playing well. Schobel has a team-best 8 1/2 sacks, and Kelsay has five. ... Their stout rush helps the defensive back end that has solid performers, especially CB Nate Clements, who is playing under the franchise tag this year -- he will be a free agent at the end of the season. ... The reports are solid on rookie S Donte Whitner (67 tackles) as he absorbs the NFL learning curve. ... The Bills aren't very big and rivals have been running over them. In the past two games, the Texans rushed for 188 yards and the Jaguars followed with 207. This could mean a big day for LaDainian Tomlinson. The Bills allow an average of 135.2 rushing yards per game, which is near the NFL bottom. ... LB London Fletcher has a team-best 105 tackles and has added two sacks.
Noteworthy
The Bills special teams are the best in league according to coach Marty Schottenheimer. KR Terrence McGee is averaging 26.5 yards and PR Roscoe Parrish checks in at an NFL-high 13.9, with a score -- and the Chargers have issues of late with their coverage teams. ... P Brian Moorman is threatening to become the first to average 40-plus yards net. He's at 40.6. ÖÝ K Rian Lindell won the game Sunday on a 42-yard field goal as time ran out -- Lindell used to pester the Chargers when he was with the Seahawks. ... Chargers general manager A.J. Smith was a scout for the Bills from 1987-88 and their director of pro personnel from 1993-2000. Ö Chargers assistant GM Buddy Nix was a Bills scout from 1993-2000. ... Chargers wide receivers coach James Lofton was part of three AFC championship teams and played in three Super Bowls with the Bills. Lofton was in Buffalo from 1989-92.

I'm sure all eyes will be on Merriman to see how he performs after 4 weeks off. Should get alot of pressure on Loss-man on defense with return of Merriman and Phillips up against a rookie RT for Bills. I anticipate Chargers will run effectively with LT and Burner on offense. I suspect Castillo will not play or play sparingly. Cesaire played real well in the snow in Cleveland in '04. Our special teams have been subpar in recent weeks only because alot of those guys were filling in for injured starters on offense/defense. With return of injured/suspended starters, special teams should be improved but Bills dangerous regardless. If we get behind I wouldn't be surprised to see a fake punt or some special teams trickery. I most want to see Rivers have a bounce back game after struggling with mechanics/happy feet vs. Raiders. I think if LT Marcus McNeill makes Bills DE Schobel ineffective, he should get serious Pro-Bowl consideration for his play all year against top notch DEs. Unfortunately, OLs don't win rookie of the year awards but he deserves consideration. Buffalo is a difficult place to play not so much because of the fans/cold/snow but because of the wind whipping off Lake Erie. Very much like old Cleveland Stadium. Forecast is for temps in upper 20s/low 30s and if the wind blows from the NW, expect lake-effect snow. Scifres and Kaeding will be center stage in this one. Marty is a good field position head coach and knows all about Buffalo's weather. This will probably be one of those games where PR throws only 20-25 passes all day. Chargers will try to exploit Bills rookie safeties with Gates when they do pass. I think Chargers will win fairly easily but nothing like last year's 48-10 pasting in SD. I expect a low scoring turnover-fest something like 23-14 Chargers.

Gregg wrote on Nov 29, 2006 2:32 PM:All is well said. But I like the phrase; "Any given Sunday". I predict the Bills not only keeping LT under the centry mark but win this game by a touchdown. Steady offensive game managment, An out of nowhere run defense that will sack Rivers at least 4 times, but the key will be great special team field position and Lindell's foot. Put that in your book and sign it. American Tatonkas
Bill wrote on Nov 29, 2006 3:06 PM:San Diego's good, but Buffalo's got the croud this time, the weather (no 80 degree temps) this time and confidence this time after winning 3 of 4!! Buffalo will shock the football world and win by a touchdown!! "Where else would you rather be than right here right now?" GO BILLS!!!!!!!
Dex wrote on Nov 29, 2006 5:14 PM:Gregg and Bill..It is one thing to be a fan and quite another to let that cloud your judgement...On any given Sunday any team can win..but the Chargers are a much better team than the Buffalo Bills...The performance we had in Denver should illustrate the ability of the Chargers to play in the cold...But if you all need more proof tune in on Sunday and watch us punk the Bills like we did the Raiders, Beangles, Donkeys, Browns, Steelers, San Fran, Titans, St Louis and soon...very soon the BILLS will be joining this list!!!
Rolf wrote on Nov 29, 2006 6:01 PM:San Diego players will cringe once they feel the cold while getting off the plane; dont forget about the wind chill also; esp at the stadium! Flash19sd, this is a much different Buffalo team from a year ago; ALL the O-Line positions have changed from a year ago, all the coaches have changed along with philosophies and of course JP is a totally different QB. Its easy to overlook the Bills, but check the score's from all their games and you will see how close almost all their games were. I know close isnt good enough, but its a step in the right direction. The weather will keep passing to a minimum and that will allow Buffalo to stack the line while on Defense; could be a long day for LT. The Bills ST and generally error free football plus the home crowd and weather will keep it close. Mark it down, Buffalo by about a FG. Playoffs though, not yet.

anthonyMiamiBoltman wrote on Nov 29, 2006 7:13 PM:Buffalo at home in December is always a tough gig for any team. However, the Bills weakness (stopping the run) plays into the strength of the Chargers (LT/MT combining for over 250 rushing yards by the end of the afternoon). Phillip Rivers won't need to drop back all day to beat this team on Sunday and "Lights Out Merriman" is really PO'd. Martyball will once again rear its ugly head-Chargers 27 Bills 13. Bolts will run the table, finish the season 14-2, and outscore Big D in Miami 35 to 27!!! We're long overdue!!! Strength & Honor!!! Stay the course boys!!!
scottdee wrote on Nov 29, 2006 7:26 PM:Gregg and Bill are talking with their hearts and not their heads. I've found Bills fans root for their team with vigor but not with all the unplesant in-your-face attitude you get from Steelers and Raiders fans. Good luck the rest of the year fellas but this Sunday the roll you are on is gonna end. While it's true about "any given Sunday", San Diego is simply the better team. Sure, maybe MAYBE you guys pull out this game on a lucky bounce or a bogus pass interference penalty but at the end of the year while we are winning playoff games you guys will be shoveling snow and watching tapes of the "glory years" with Jim Kelly and Thurman "where's my helmet?" Thomas. You guys had your chance 4 years in a row in late 80s/early 90s. The only Super Bowl I ever lost money on was Buffalo/Washington. How could you guys let Mark Rypien beat you?! It's our turn now, my friends!! Bills will lose CB Clements to free agency next year (maybe to San Diego?) but they have a good young defense regardless. Too bad they lost rookie DT McCargo early in year even if drafting him so early left me and lots of others scratching our heads. However, offense needs LOTS of work and Loss-man is not the answer at QB and McGahee will be another Fred Taylor and never make it through a full year without some kind of injury. I like WR Lee Evans but he's not the second coming of Santana Moss/Deion Branch and is really just a #2 or slot receiver. They did the right thing by drafting for defense last year and they really should draft this year for offense, especially OLs. Make sure to drop a line to this forum on Monday after the game win or lose, OK?
Daryl wrote on Nov 29, 2006 7:57 PM: I see this game as a "Trap game", in which the football god's may, not saying will, deliver the Bolts a loss before they come home for a 4 game run towards the playoffs & hopefully beyond!! I'm a Charger fan through & through & would love to see a win this Sun, but something in my gut says they due for 1 more loss this season. I hope I'm wrong, as I sometimes am, but we'll see. Truth is, IF we need to lose one, then let it be this one so we can come home "hungrier" for Denver & KC, then Seattle on the road!!
pl52 wrote on Nov 29, 2006 10:58 PM:Jammer haters amuse me. He had three passes defensed and an intereception against one PI.... Key for SD Sunday is not Merriman or LT, but McCree and Michael Turner. Both have to play. They need to come back healthy and whole for Denver and KC, which would just about seal the season.
James wrote on Nov 29, 2006 11:01 PM:I like these Bills fans saying...oh look how close our losses were...doesn't mean jack...YOU LOST....SCOREBOARD...what are you 5-6. Keep flapping your gums all the way to 5-7... The weather?...stop deluding yourself...what are the keys in cold weather?...being able to run and being able to stop the run...guess what...The Chargers are top five in both and Buffalo's run defense is horrendous and their offense, average at best... SCOREBOARD: CHARGERS 10-2
Buff wrote on Nov 30, 2006 6:30 AM:You Charger fans are funny. You have a couple of good years sandwiched in with a bunch of terrible years and all of a sudden you think you are the class of the league? Let me put it this way, your pathetic franchise has never done much of anything, and the only reason you have any kind of talent on your team is because you have an ex-Bill front offic guru running your team. Have fun while this lasts Charger fans, because you are going to be the putrid bottom of the pile franchise that you've always been in a couple years. Oh, by the way, don't get your hopes up in the playoffs this year. There is no chance in hell you'll beat the Pats, Ravens, or the Colts. Even with your best team in the past decade, it still isn't good enough. Losers.
E Homp wrote on Nov 30, 2006 1:18 PM:Hey Buff, I'm glad we amuse you. Thanks for the front office guru. He IS quite the smart guy, leaving the cold and bitter like yourself. And by the way, what titles have the Bills won? Oh yeah, 4 straight second place championships. Nice. Cheers, and enjoy the frosty nosecicles....ps: You would likely have an actual title, if you stuck with Flutie instead of that pretty boy Johnson.
To Buffy wrote on Nov 30, 2006 4:34 PM:Hey Buffy, stop talking. I have edited one of your sentences for you. Here is what you meant to say. "We (Bills organization & Bills fans) had a long drought of terrible years and all of a sudden we know we really suck. We wish we were like the Chargers." We've been winning and you just haven't. Please show up this Sunday on here after the game to apologize to Charger fans and all Bills fans after the Chargers win. We will accept your apology.
