LAKE ELSINORE: Authorities say car fires were arson
By The Californian | ∞
LAKE ELSINORE ---- Investigators confirmed Tuesday that fires destroying two vehicles, including one belonging to a Lake Elsinore city councilman, were intentionally set.
Arson investigators found what they describe as "ignitable liquid" at the scene of the blazes, said Cheri Patterson, a spokeswoman for the Riverside County Fire Department.
The fires were reported about 1:10 a.m. Monday on Ryan Avenue, near Manning Street in Lake Elsinore.
City Councilman Thomas Buckley said Monday that he awakened to a hiss followed by two pops. He said he looked outside to see his car ablaze, along with a pickup belonging to a neighbor.
Buckley said he believed the fires were intentionally set, and a neighbor said he saw someone running from the area right after the flames started.
The councilman said he has not received any threats and hoped that the arson was not in response to anything city-related.
Fire officials said they had no suspects identified as of Tuesday and are still investigating the case.

He said that his neighbors have been helping him, I wonder if anyone is letting him borrow their car. Maybe the city can give him one of the Explorers the old Assistant city manager used to drive.

Living in the Real World wrote on Jul 23, 2008 11:30 AM:Tom might be a great guy and has done a wonderful job on the city council but GIVING him a city owned vehicle to use is not the answer. The vehicle that was burned might not have even been tom’s, some say it was owned by his next door neighbor and he was only LOANING tom the car. If this was tom’s car his insurance should give him a rental reimbursement and give him fair market value for the loss of his car. Like me most of you in your 40s own or are buying your vehicle and tom should do the same just like the rest of us. Loaning ANY elected city official a city owned vehicle is just a BAD IDEA.
