CARLSBAD: Tourists stabbed near motel

By North County Times | Saturday, August 30, 2008 4:02 PM PDT

CARLSBAD ---- A man with a knife attacked a group of tourists who were returning to their motel early Saturday after a night out, a Carlsbad police sergeant said.

The group had spent the night drinking at the Ocean House bar in the Carlsbad Village and had walked back to the Surf Motel at 3136 Carlsbad Boulevard about 1:20 a.m. where some of them were staying, Sgt. Keith Blackburn said.

In front of the motel, a man unknown to the group who had also been drinking at the bar began acting strange and arguing with them, Blackburn said. The man pulled out a pocket knife and sliced one of the group, a woman in her 20s. A 25-year-old man tried to intervene and was also cut.

The woman suffered cuts to her arms and hands and was taken to Tri-City Medical Center in Oceanside, Blackburn said. The man had minor cuts to his arms and was treated at the scene.

Carlsbad officers arrived within minutes of the attack but the suspect had fled. They searched the area with the help of a San Diego police helicopter, but were unable to find him.

The suspect is described was a white man in his 20s, clean-shaven with buzz-cut hair, between 5 foot 8 inches and 5 feet 11 inches tall and very thin. He was wearing jeans and a green hooded sweat shirt at the time of the assault.

osideindian wrote on Aug 30, 2008 4:46 PM:thanks carlsbad for taking the spot light away from Oceanside. With so many problems and stabbings lately , the city is making Oceanside look good.. Now Carlsbad police have some issues to take care of instead of harrasing patrons who are still having drinks and a good time in local bars.. Good job Carlsbad!!!!!

Amy wrote on Aug 30, 2008 6:34 PM:Was this really a stabbing? Or were two people cut with a pocket knife? I guess a stabbing is more dramatic. "Sliced one of the group" and "acting strange." Who writes this stuff?

Frank wrote on Aug 30, 2008 7:10 PM:That's it!!! I am moving!!!

To Frank wrote on Aug 30, 2008 8:55 PM:To Oceanside? Good luck, don't let the door hit you on the way out!

No matter how much O'side tries to implement Dick Lyons vision for the town, it will always be O'side.

This is an abberation.

Edwin wrote on Aug 30, 2008 10:07 PM:I grew up in Carlsbad 50s & 60s era...it was a safe town with a total of 5 CBPD officers making their rounds and stopping at the Denny's for a bite to eat. Carlsbad was a very mellow small beach town with no crime at all. We never had a care in the world till Mayor Bud gave the "wink & nod" to the developers to "build out" our beautiful little town. The crime caught up to us in the 80s. Murder, assault, rape, robbery are all around us now.

carlsbadian wrote on Aug 31, 2008 7:07 AM:to osideindian this isn't some random act of violence like you experience nightly in your town. Obviously these drunk morons had some type of problem that started in the bar and came to a head on the street. And it sounds like you are one of the drunks that CPD probably has to deal with, stay in Oceanside then, we appreciate that.

esteban wrote on Aug 31, 2008 11:35 AM:I would have loved this idiot to try and attack me. You'd be reading a different headline that's for sure.

To Edwin wrote on Sep 1, 2008 11:21 AM:Right you are! Sure, we expect 'growth' over time, but Bud convinced his CHS students they'd get a 'good grade' if they campaigned for him. Too late, the damage done, houses for sale on every street. Paradise? I don't think so.

To Carlsbadian wrote on Sep 2, 2008 9:09 AM:Really? At least Oceanside is trying to deal with their problems instead of denying that we have any. I am from Oceanside, but hang out at all the local Carlsbad bars where I see a fair share of violence on a nightly basis. I don't recall the last time there was a shooting or stabbing at a bar in Oceanside, but I do remember a shoot out at Squid Joe's not too long ago or even a MURDER at The Village Faire, which I do believe was a "random act of violence". And were you at Ocean House that night? How do you know what happened? YOU DON'T! So,Hmmm.... Oceanside is the only town with the problems? Think again. There are problems EVERYWHERE. Open your eyes!! Keep you're ignorant thoughts and DRUG ADDICTS out of Oceanside as well. We'd appreciate that!

FTM wrote on Sep 2, 2008 12:19 PM:ALL the beach towns have these problems. It comes with the territory. A huge stretch of Carlsbad is all State property and no one is there but campers and all the crime there is handled by State Police, so for many years the only crime we even knew about in Carlsbad was from the Academy south to Power Plant. It's probably the most dangereous two mile stretch of beach in all of San Diego if you count the crimes by the square footage of land. Oceanside, DelMar, Encinitas, and Lucadia actually do have more crime incidences but they are spread out over dozens of square miles of beachfront per city. Also, the homeless and druggies and hookers that were caught by CPD in the evening used to be dumped at the border near the Audubon across the bridge but that activity was stopped by Chief McCoy. Now Carlsbad has to deal with thier OWN druggies and hookers and homeless and the CPD is a bit overwhelmed. (Carlsbad does not even have a helicopter!) All the crime is in the same 2 square miles in Carlsbad and the CPD seems to be afraid to patrol it in a pro-cative way like the OPC does in Oceanside. It does take a lot of guts to walk into danger, but that's part of the job. That's also why we in Oceanside love our cops and are willing to pay for many of them. It's turned out to be a big asset to our city to have these "brave" police people here in OPD (as opposed to less expensive "shy" police people like in CPD). Let's face it - most of the police that applied at CPD did so because they were not willing to deal with the danger working for OPD or SDPD or OCS even though OPD pays more. Oh well, you get what you pay for I always say. (Which brings up your High School . . but I won't go there).

to To Carlsbadian wrote on Sep 2, 2008 12:30 PM:Why do you spend your money in Carlsbad bars? You are there EVERY NIGHT? Sounds like you need a hobby.

Greg in Oceanside wrote on Sep 2, 2008 8:42 PM:Yes FTM is right. And I'd like to add, while Carlsbad and Oceanside have their share of crime there seems to be some distinctions. Oceanside is one of the first cities that travelers come to south of Camp Pendleton and many of the crimes used to be related to the military. OPD has done a lot of great things to clean up the 'transient' criminals (hookers, thieves, and thugs) from north (LA etc.). Oceanside has always had a more significant problem with gangs, which is largely responsible for a lot of the crime.

Carlsbad has attracted lots of skaters, surfers, and beach bums, and with all the eateries, bars, and other nightspots, this is a recipe for other kinds of crime associated with these business. And, from what I've observed over the years there are too many losers who get into confrontations with customers of these establishments.

Carlsbad and Oceanside police departments and the law-abiding citizens need to work together to rid our communities of criminals of all types.

FTM wrote on Sep 3, 2008 1:12 PM:Greg got the demographics issue, and that's really the answer. Carlsbad planners are already shutting down live music and bars in the village. It's a strategic decision that will lower the crime there without incurring more police expense. I think Carlsbad people are more of the quiet type, (an retirees), so that actually works well for them. NO activity at night. That should solve the problem. Oceanside is a compleatly different animal. The downtown Oceanside THRIVES on crowds of people. It's when the crowds are TOO THIN that the crime spikes in downtown Oceanside because the criminals can prey on thier victims when no one is around. Oceanside is going in the OPPOSIT direction downtown by having MORE night life MORE festivals and farmers markets and MORE activities and venues. More bars too. Oceanside has the police to handle it and the more people that crowd into downtown the more money it creates for more cops. The residents of Oceanside are younger than Carlsbad residents (military and young families - lot's of singles too) so Oceanside residents WANT a noisy, active, lively, crowded downtown. Some people just love to live in the middle of the action - thus row houses in the down town go for a million bucks. It sounds crazy but that's just the way it is. That's the 'beach' thing. Oceanside embraces it, Carlsbad does not. To each his own - I prefer Oceanside.
